Does your pet have seasonal allergies?

For many people springtime means allergy time, which can include itchy eyes, runny nose and general discomfort. What you may not know is that pets are just as susceptible to seasonal allergies, they just can’t tell us!

A frequent symptom of seasonal allergies in pets is itchiness. A very common itchy skin condition in pets is atopic dermatitis, which is an inflammatory skin condition caused by a reaction to allergens in the environment.

A wide range of allergens can trigger symptoms including trees, grasses, pollens, dust mites, insects and mould spores.

Common signs your pet may be itchy include:

  • Scratching and biting

  • Red, inflamed and infected skin

  • Dry, flaky skin

  • Excessive shedding

  • Compulsive paw licking

  • Scooting or licking anal region

  • Smelly, itchy or red ears

  • Chronic ear infections

The frequent itching can develop into hot spots, or raw and inflamed skin areas, which can become infected and require medication.

To diagnose and manage skin conditions our vets will need to conduct a thorough physical examination of your pet, in conjunction with gathering a full history of your pet’s conditions. This involves ruling out any food allergies or parasite problems that may exist. Our vets can then suggest the best course of testing or treatment options for your pet’s symptoms.
