Am I ready?

Before you adopt a new pet, you will need to ask yourself the questions “Am I ready?”. Whilst very rewarding, a pet is a commitment for their entire life so you need to be willing to commit the time, finances, space and lifestyle to your new family member.

Can I afford a new pet?

Owning a new pet comes with both initial and ongoing financial costs that will need to be added to your budget. These can include:

  • Adoption fees

  • Council registration fees

  • Vaccinations

  • Desexing

  • Microchipping

  • Health checks

  • Food

  • Toys

  • Bedding

  • Grooming supplies

  • Litter tray and supplies (cats)

  • Costs to make your backyard and home safe and secure

  • Unexpected emergency costs

  • Obedience training

Do I have time?

Different pets have different time commitments. You will need to have a think about how much time your pet will need for attention, exercise, grooming, training and general care. If you work long hours or travel regularly you will need to consider how to include pet care into your existing lifestyle and time commitments.

Do I have the space?

Your pets size, energy levels and accessories can help to determine how much space you will need. All pets require a suitable space for bedding, food and water bowls. Cats also require litter trays. Other considerations include a pet safe backyard, suitable local areas for exercise, scratching poles (for cats) and toys.

If you are renting, you will need to confirm your landlord allows pets and any further requirements they may have.

Which pet is right for me?

Thinking of adopting a pet

Different species and breeds have different needs so take time to research the most suitable pet to adopt that will best match your lifestyle and personality. Research on-line, ask friends and family, speak to your local animal shelter and vet. Aim to get a realistic understanding of your pets needs so you can give them a happy healthy life.

What age pet should I adopt?

Younger animals such a puppies or kittens are cute, funny and full of surprises. But like babies they need a lot of care and attention. This can include toilet and behavioural training, socialisation, safe exercise and lots of play. As they learn to grow, they can also explore, chew, make messes and have accidents in the house.

No matter what age, all pets need love, training, safety and guidance. However if you are not up for toilet training or needle sharp teeth chewing on your toes, consider adopting an older or senior pet. When you choose an older pet, you have a pretty good idea of what you are getting. Providing a forever home to an adult pet and working with them to help them overcome any hurdles they have faced can be incredibly rewarding and result in a long-term loving relationship.
