One of the first things you should do after bringing your new puppy or kitten home is to arrange a health check with your local vet. So how do you prepare for their first visit and what happens during and after their check-up. Read our guide to find out.

Before you go

Find a local vet – research your closest vet and 24 hour emergency hospital and save their details in your phone. Woofpurnay Veterinary Hospital offer a 24 hour on call pet emergency service. Simply call 03 8784 4444 to reach or professional and friendly vet on call.

Make an appointment – it is recommended to make an appointment with your local vet as soon as possible. Let them know when you make the booking that it’s a new puppy or kitten health check so they can allocate the required amount of time and let you know what you need to bring to the appointment.

Bring someone with you – it can be useful to bring along a friend or family member to help during the car ride and visit.

Let them go to the toilet – give your puppy or kitten a chance to go to the bathroom before setting off.

What you will need

Medical information – bring along any paperwork provided by the breeder or rescue centre such as vaccinations, parasite control and feeding schedule. Also write a list of any concerns or questions you may have about your puppy or kitten.

Stool sample – your vet may ask you to bring a sample of your puppy or kittens stools to check for worms. Ask when making your appointment.

Collar, ID tag & lead – make sure your puppy or kitten has their collar and ID tag before leaving home. For puppies you will also need a lead.

Car harness or crate – you will need a harness or crate to secure your puppy or kitten in the car. You will also need this when taking them into the veterinary clinic.

Comfort items – provide them with a comfort toy or blanket to help them feel secure. If they have a favourite treat you can bring a few of these along also to reward their good behaviour.

Rags, old towels & poop bags - bring along some rags, towels and poop bags to clean up any messes along the way.

What happens during puppy or kittens first visit?

During their first visit, your puppy or kitten will be given a thorough examination which generally includes their weight and temperature, as well as their body condition, skin, fur, eyes, ears, teeth and mouth.

Their first visit often includes their first vaccination. The vet will also want to discuss a preventative healthcare routine including ongoing vaccinations, parasite control, micro chipping and de-sexing options. Our vets can also inform you about early signs of illness to look out for.

It is also a great time to ask any questions you might have such as nutrition, exercise, grooming, insurance and obedience.

What happens after puppy or kittens first visit?

Your vet will advise when follow up visits are necessary to continue their vaccination program and keep an eye on their health.

Once you arrive back home, spend some quality time cuddling and patting your puppy or kitten to help them relax after their visit.

Reflect on how the visit went and if necessary, look for ways to improve visits in the future, with the help of your vet.
