Annual health checks are a great way to keep your pet in their best possible shape. They also help your vet identify and treat any health concerns before they become serious. A full examination allows your vet to take a closer look at your pet, whilst also giving you the opportunity to ask about any questions or concerns you might have.

At Woofpurnay we recommend annual health checks for all pets. Puppies and kittens require additional visits to give them their best possible start and commence their vaccination program. For senior pets, we recommend bi-annual health checks to meet your pets changing health care needs and ensure early detection and treatment of disease.

Why are health checks important?

Early disease detection

One of the key benefits of a regular health check is the potential to detect any early signs of illness. There may be small changes in your pet’s behaviour or condition that your vet can detect as a warning sign. Early disease detection can allow a treatment program to be put in place at the earliest possible stage, increasing the chance of a positive outcome.

Preventative treatment

There are a number of animal diseases that can be prevented with the help of your vet. Vaccinations play an important role towards the long-term health of our pets, helping to maintain immunity against a range of diseases. Parasite treatments can also help deter nasty fleas, ticks and worms. Our vets can help you determine the most suitable preventative healthcare program to protect your pet.

Weight and body condition

Obesity can cause many health problems for dogs and cats. Australian research estimates that 41% of dogs and 32% of cats are overweight. There are a number of ways to control weight gain and our vets can offer a tailored diet and exercise program to help your pet lead a longer, healthier, happier life.

Behaviour and mood

Subtle changes in your pet’s behaviour or mood can indicate pain or illness. For example, a cat with diabetes may start drinking and urinating more. A dog with worms may have a sudden change in appetite. Please discuss any of your pets behaviour changes with your vet. The earlier our vets can determine the cause, the sooner a treatment plan can be put into place to help your pet recover.

Dental disease

Pet dental disease is a common health problem for dogs and cats. It can be quite painful for your pet, lead to tooth loss and can also cause damage to vital organs such as the heart, liver and kidneys if left untreated. The good news is that dental disease can be prevented, treated and even reversed if discovered early.

Skin and ear disease

Dry, itchy, flaky skin are all early signs of skin disease. Ear infections can also go unnoticed until they become serious, so ear checks are important. Red skin and inflammation can also be the start of a skin infection. A full examination of your pet can uncover some hidden issues that could cause discomfort for your pet if not addressed.

Lumps and bumps

Small skin masses can often go undetected as they are covered by hair or located in inaccessible areas. A clinical examination can potentially uncover any hidden lumps and bumps. In such cases, accurate diagnosis and early removal if necessary are important to maximise the chances of a good outcome.

What to expect at a routine health check

During your visit your pet will be given a thorough examination which generally includes your pets weight, body condition, skin, fur, eyes, ears, teeth and mouth.

Vaccinations and parasite control are also an important part of your pet’s health check. Your vet will ask lots of questions about your pet’s health and it is a great opportunity for you to chat about any concerns or questions you might have too such as nutrition, weight and behaviour.

If your vet has any concerns, he or she may suggest further testing, such as a blood test or x-ray.

How often should you take your pet for a health check

At Woofpurnay we recommend annual health checks for all pets, usually at the time of their yearly vaccination. Younger pets and senior pets require more frequent visits.

New kitten and puppy health checks

Welcoming a new kitten or puppy into your home is a fun and exciting time, but it’s also important to give your new furry family member the best possible start. There are a number of things to consider, but don’t feel overwhelmed. At Woofpurnay we can take you through all that is required and the best way to care for your new pet. Some areas that will be discussed include:

 Senior pet health checks

Many pets are considered to be seniors after seven years of age depending on the type of pet and breed. Some of the signs of ageing in senior pets include hearing loss, reduced vision, dental and skin problems. Older pets are also more likely to suffer certain conditions and diseases such as arthritis, obesity, heart disease and kidney disease.

For senior pets we recommend bi-annual health checks to meet your pets changing health care needs and to ensure early detection and treatment of disease so they can live as long and happy as possible. Some areas that will be discussed include:

  • Dietary requirements

  • Modified exercise program

  • Preventative healthcare including vaccinations and parasite control

  • Regular body checks for lumps, bumps and skin issues

  • Improved dental healthcare

  • Help with mobility issues

  • Signs of ageing
